Manila, The Philippines is an archipelagic country in Southeast Asia. Situated in the western Pacific Ocean, it consists of about 7,641 islands. It is gateway of international shipping and air lines. Business activities are buoyant with notable performance in the services sector including the agribusiness, healthcare, information and technology, business process outsourcing (BPO), logistics and infrastructure.

 

In the presentation Ms. Pamela Pascual, President and Executive Chief Officer WTC Manila, Ms. Monique Wisse, Board member and Vice President for International Affairs, Dutch Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines and Mr. Mitchel Smolders, Executive Director Dutch Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines gave a detailed description of promising sectors in combination with doing business in Manila, Philippines.

 

Manila is one of the cities that was given the opportunity by World Trade Center Leeuwarden to present its city as a promising city for international business.

 

The Philippines are divided into three main parts; Luzon which is the economic, financial, administrative and industrial base, Visayas which is popular for the tourist and Mindanao which is the agriculture-based economy. The country is number 1 in the world for Business English proficiency by the Global English Corporation. The Agribusiness, Healthcare, Technology, Infrastructure and Logistics are in the top 5 industries of the region.

WTC Manilla and the Chamber of Commerce in The Philippines offers help to support you while starting up your business in Manilla. For example, with the challenges in the country among which government regulations, there is overregulation when it comes to setting up a business. There are a lot of opportunities for the Dutch companies for example with the agriculture sector or in the water technology.

There are currently 150 Dutch companies in The Philippines. There are cultural differences between The Philippines and The Netherlands; respect is highly valued while doing business. Also, status is important and should be acknowledged. According to Ms. Monique Wisse the Filipinos are very friendly and tells us that the Philippines are very developed in having businesswoman in high functions in comparison with other countries.
